L’étranger en face / The Stranger Across
de ce qui rayonne
lumière sur les feuilles
le vert
s’argente
et vibre au vent
éclats qui
dansent
en plein soleil
l’ombre assombrit
tant qu’ils restent verts
from what shines
light on leaves
the green
turns silver
and quivers in the wind
gleams that
dance
in full sunlight
shadow darkens
the earth that,
step after step, rises up
bouquets of dust
joining the gloss
of leaves
pellicle on which gets stamped
the passage of ants
(ancestors made porridge from them)
The view that springs from memory
is swallowed
by the vestiges of the retreat
that had welcomed the Sufi
onto the soil of Andalusia
had he plucked a branch
at noon when the flowers were battered
by the rain that settles powder
and filters the air?
the forest reflects
transparent
in the hollow of the damp hand
I will not wait in the scorching heat
for the return of the mist —
to enjoy its cool stretches
over there near the oak
and the acorns on which the animal
with the black hooves grazes
lower down on the other shore
the grassland gives way
to the carpet of esparto and sagebrush
inhale there the flower
of a single day
born from the sudden shower
that washes the jujube trees
on the heat-cracked clay
where I came to pitch my tent
and in the early morning soak
my bread in the sap
that flowed between the stones
to stain the canvas so close
in front of the bitter smell
coming from the hayricks
and spreading through the air
down a path that jolts along
towards hatred
hot ash buried beneath the sand
haven’t I told you
that these trees dance as they wait
for the season
where my ghost
finds itself pursuing the juice
squeezed from the fruit?
the flesh
around the pit squirts
should we pluck them
while still green
or wait for them to shift to black?
I would have made a violet ink from them
to transcribe these words
on the white of the napkin
as soon as the cheek receives their spray
the stone crushed transmutes
the fluid to golden liquor
before it skims the walls
of the throat that takes in
an aura of hazelnut
the skin also is smeared with it
and the foot anointed loses the rock path
the same one that traps
treetrunk weighed down with years
the flow releases the cloth
from the heels
bearing the stature of the hero
runner or launcher of peace
he should be crowned with a branch
that celebrates with green his share of silver
I still have said little about those bodies
bound in their furrows
knotted reinforced warty
split drilled pierced by the void
the prayer niche is hollowed out there
house of the prayerful who falls in love with
age-old archives
tracing the good years
and the outbreaks of drought
near the prickly pears
that relax the Sabra from his anger
he digs up the olive tree
very present on the esplanade
where the recollection is scattered
that mingles the sacred with the holy
he shows it upside down
the mop of its roots
wrapped with earth
inside the gold dome
and the mountain that in the plural
exalts his name
in the gallop of the winged horse
like a flaking of clay
slow to move with breath
it is time to change shelter
to move away from the hillsides of Galilee
and follow the rows that cut
the fields of Calabria
or else make for the sea
lured by the skulls that sparkle
on the island where grow
the flowers of oblivion
and give the tree the meaning of the journey
in the whiteness I touch its
mask migrating
towards the fogs of Paris
in a garden that in times of frost
dreams of peace
shifted from the fringes of the desert
to the country where cement is king
still we must plot out the channels
that — where there is a lack —
will guide water drop by drop
over an earth in search of salvation
the green voice recalls him
even if it means swallowing all directions
confusing the compass rose
disorienting the compasses
as a magnet does to iron
the beak of the lamp
holds the flame
to give
light to light
neither Western nor Eastern
the lovers strip bare
the gashes of their grafts
they uncover the roots
gliding like snakes
coiled around the jar
that bubbles with wine
in fall the birds chatter
around the ripe fruit
trapped by the net thrown
over the branches
taste in their flesh
the olive that fed it
flesh impregnated by fat
clouds that hiss
fruit of the fruit on the fruit itself
it is eaten in the evening
when water streams through the tracery
where the clock chimes
it flows
in the squeak of the clepsydra
noria cut in the woods
that comes from the dead tree
where the October bird lives
fond of the oil that gilds it
whose glow is projected
on the face of the foreign messiah
so that in him the law abolishes
every commandment
