À la taverne d’Abû-Nuwâs / At the Tavern of Abû-Nuwâs

corps invisible presque, ou bientôt ;

English Translation

Here then is the poem of one already dead,
written by the hand of one yet living —

body nearly invisible, or soon to be;
sentient body still, present always.

I would not be known well and recognized
absent an eyelash beat over this chasm,

and this no doubt would cleanse the world, this beat
of an eyelid over an eye, it would distract

an infinite part of all this drunkenness, an instant
from the bottom of the chasm even it would be to breathe — this hand

would write this line again, I would be still
for a moment this seeing eye, and the transcribing hand,

and this drunken body would know reading and read itself,
travelling on the edge of this abyss, always ready to drown.
