Biography

Né en 1930 en Suisse, dans la région de Berne et des monts du Jura, PIERRE CHAPPUIS a étudié à l’Université de Genève avant d’enseigner la littérature française à Neuchâtel où il habite encore aujourd’hui. Ses principaux livres sont Le biais des mots (1998), Dans la foulée (1996), D’un pas suspendu (1994), La preuve par le vide (1992), Moins que glaise (1990) et Éboulis et autres poèmes (1984). PIERRE CHAPPUIS was born in 1930 in Switzerland, in the Bern region of the Jura mountains. He studied at the University of Geneva before teaching French literature in the county of Neuchâtel where he still lives. His works include Le biais des mots (1998), Dans la foulée (1996), D’un pas suspendu (1994), La preuve par le vide (1992), Moins que glaise (1990), and Éboulis et autres poèmes (1984). To quote and paraphrase literary critic, Marion Graf: “Resisting stillness by embracing the discontinuous, his (Chappuis’) poetry hurtles the reader over the void, and provides concrete perspectives that transform water, clouds, snow and falling stones into ideas and instants, memories and waking dreams. The dynamism present in the poems opens up complex creative fields that directly summon the reader’s participation. Ever conscious about the gap between reality and language, each of Chappuis’ works confronts and overcomes this challenge differently, placing him in a distinguished line of master experimenters such as Michel Leiris, Pierre Reverdy and André Bouchet.”

TIM KEANE is a poet and fiction writer. Poems from his first collection Alphabets of Elsewhere (Cinnamon Press, 2007) appeared in Modern Painters, Denver Quarterly, Poetry New Zealand, Quarterly Literary Review Singapore and other magazines. Excerpts from his novel That Strange Flower the Sun have been widely published. His French translations appeared in Cipher, Interim, Pusteblume and Parthenon West Review. MYRIAM MORAZ studied English, Spanish, French and Latin at the University of Lausanne where she now teaches French as a foreign language, specializing in phonetics. She is much engaged in language studies through poetry writing and translations. Her translation of the Swiss poet Pierre-Alain Tâche is forthcoming in Silk Road. Currently, she is working with Tim Keane on an anthology of translations of contemporary Swiss romande poets.
