Passages from An Attempt at a Room

for Pasternak
Walls — the walls’ stabilities — for me
to number. But saccades? By chance?
I’ve memorized three walls, but now the
fourth
— behind me — is a blank I cannot verify.
Who knows — back to the wall? —
a wall perhaps — perhaps
not. Not quite. But the barrel of a gun,
not a wall behind my back… So, that —
not as you pleased. Dispatched…
And now the brain is clamped.
How the back resettles in the ground —
that sheer wall, Cheka-barrier, behind,
that daybreak dawns, that execution
clears, unclouded, clearer than in shadow,
cruelly from behind, into the back, with
brutal gestures
that I never understand — the execution.
But forget the torture-cellar — set that room
aside —
my ceiling is reliable…
Do my blinds announce your coming?
My room is hastily constucted,
sketched — rough-drafted —
whitening dullness.
No plasterers, no builders on the roof —
sleep, dream. A watch on wireless passages.
A precipice behind the eyelids, where she
and he discover one another — creviced
on the other side of centuries…
And after? Sleep
in tones and shades.
There was — climbing.
There was — bowing
forehead to forehead.
Ahead — your forehead,
mine — a flagrant half-
rhyme in my mouth…
What if my floor is dirty?
Too much rubbish? Little sweeping? — Grieving
mountains! Poets coupled by a single dash —
suspended…
over nothingness — the no one of our
bodies. And the reliable ceiling
crowed to all the angels.
