Aubade I

In the night I could hear the waves
though they were a half mile away
Through the open skylight

from beyond the tidal marsh they came clear
and musical to the room where our joined bodies
lifted and fell and we were almost silent

Now over the bay above the sea smoke
dawn’s pastel light pushes a lobster boat
toward its markers

and I turn from the dream that brought you
back to me and wake
into my own separateness.
