Help: Viewing Cyrillic

English Translation

The fountain’s frogs croak and stream
but sleep no more and once
awake — gulping mouths and
shells of power, amphibian
water’s murmur — the city lovingly
assents to please the powerful —

slender, summering antiquity, easy
nakedness with greedy looks and trivial
feet — the bridge, the still unravished
Angel, crosses the yellow river on tamed steps.

Naked, deformed, ashen, to a drumming
tumor-growth of dwellings, Rome,
once a cupola of swallows
from its side-streets and its wind-drafts,
now transmutes into a murderous nursery
for Italian blackshirts, brown blood-
hirelings, spiteful wolf-cubs
of dead Caesars…

And your orphans, Michelangelo,
their stone now clothed in shame —
Night, raw from crying, David,
easy youthful innocence,
the bed where Moses stretches
like a cataract — with
freedom’s power and a lion’s measure,
lulled in slavery into silence.

Wrinkled terraces of stairs,
rivers of steps that flow into the squares
where footsteps sound like deeds.
Idle as sponges —
not for a crippled bliss
the sluggish Romans stir.

The Forum-pit has been unearthed,
the Herod gates reopened.
Over Rome he hovers, dictator-
degenerate, who hangs a heavy chin
above his city.
